Home fragrance brand Wax Lyrical adapted its factory to produce hand and surface sanitizer for the NHS at the start of the Covid-19 lockdown, and now to support people and businesses returning to work

In a bid to address the national shortage of sanitiser, Wax Lyrical has adapted its Cumbria-based facility in March, which usually manufactures candles, reed diffusers and other home fragrances, to create a 70% alcohol hand sanitiser formula and a fragranced surface spray.

The Cumbria-based brand transformed its business in a matter of weeks and produced 1 million units of sanitiser within the first month of production.

At the time of announcing the sanitiser production, Warren Gell, Global Commercial Director of Wax Lyrical, said: ‘We really wanted to find a way to help. To produce an essential product for dedicated front-line workers was a way that our facilities could be put to such important use. I’m proud of the team at Wax Lyrical who worked together to prepare for this production in just a matter of days.’

Wax Lyrical Head of Laboratory & Innovation Dr Will Locke, worked alongside personal care manufacturing specialist Jeremy Thomas to create a new sanitiser formula and the liquid lines in the factory, which are usually used to manufacture reed diffuser fragrances, have been converted to pump the alcohol for the sanitisers.

The Gift Fair

Today, Wax Lyrical is continuing to produce sanitiser in response to the UK demand with the range available to buy online and in a number of retailers, and the team is urging businesses to stock up in preparation for staff returning to work. The new hand sanitiser and surface sprays are BRC certified and all the ingredients are EU approved.

Wax Lyrical is encouraging employers to stock work spaces with sanitiser in the interest of staff safety. 50ml pocket-size bottles per employee, 500ml bottles per work station and fragranced spray which sanitises surfaces and handles are among the products available.
